Two men left their young children on a small boat in the middle of the sea while they went out for a drink, an inquest has heard.

Paul Jones, 31, and his friend George Allnut, were on board the Baleno, a 38ft fibreglass boat, when the tragic incident occurred.

Paul had brought his two children Colm, three, and Noah, two, along with their mother, Kirsty Henry, 28, to the boat with his sister Lynette, 25, and her boyfriend.

Gramford Leisure, whose employee Mr Jones was, said in a statement that they had agreed to pick up Mr Allnut and his son George, 18, from the boat for a pub crawl.

Mr Allnut had booked the Baleno online, having asked Mr Jones for permission to use it, and had checked the family’s safety before they left.

Although the boat was out of sight of the shore, a member of the public called the police after hearing shouting and screaming coming from the boat.

Police searched the sea for five hours, and the boat was found just before 6pm. It had drifted some 70 miles off the Isle of Wight and the next morning, the boys were found dead in the cabin.

An inquest at Winchester Coroners’ Court heard that the boys had died from hypothermia and that they had been left in a sitting position.

The family raised a glass of red wine to toast Colm, aged three, who was at the back of the boat, and Noah, aged two, who was at the front.

The boat was used for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and on board there were six kites, three kites, a kite board and a kite bag.

The inquest heard that Mr Allnut had earlier told Mr Jones not to use the boat because he “could not handle it”.

Police diving supervisor Darren George told the inquest the boys’ bodies were in such a frozen state that they had to be brought to shore in a body bag.

A post mortem examination concluded that there was no evidence of alcohol, drugs or violence, and concluded that the boys died within a few hours of each other.

A pathologist found traces of marijuana in Noah’s system and a panel of toxicologists
