Merging and Extracting Elements of an Image
To combine the various elements of an image into a single new image, you need to have a way to “merge” the elements. The Photoshop Merge To Photoshop Layers feature is a great tool, shown in Figure 5-9, to create one image from the multiple layers in your composition.
To extract a single component from an image, you may need to use the Extract Features tool (refer to Figure 5-9), which can be a bit complicated when you’re using the tool to extract a component of a particular object.

You can find out more about merging layers in Chapter 8.
To extract a component, or individual element, from an image, you can use the Extract Features tool, which was covered in Chapter 4, as in Figure 5-9. You can also use the Free Transform function discussed in Chapter 3 to manipulate an image so that you can make the component easier to extract.
Making an Image Transparent and Masking
Because many objects have more than one layer of various shapes or colors, it can be difficult to tell which object is a single object and which is background. To avoid this problem, you can make an image transparent. You can also mask the image, or block out part of the image to expose a specific portion of the image.
You can make an object partially transparent by using one or more of the following techniques:
Unlock a layer, as described in the next section, and change the opacity.
Select the layer. Choose Layer⇒Transparency⇒Blend if the layer transparency is set to 100 percent. To make the object slightly transparent, set the opacity to between 20 percent and 60 percent.
Choose Filter⇒Blur⇒Gaussian Blur. In the dialog box, select a Smart Radius value between 1 and 5 pixels. For sharper images, choose a larger Smart Radius value.
Because Photoshop tends to smooth things out, I often use a mesh filter to enhance the edges of objects. Choose Filter⇒3D⇒Mesh. In the dialog box, select a Mesh Radius value between 5 and 25 pixels. For sharper edges, select a larger Mesh

Getting started
Activate the AI-based content-aware repair tool by clicking Tools -> Content-Aware Repair. Clicking the button will do nothing.
Select the Content-Aware Repair tool icon from the Tools dropdown.
To start editing your image, click the Content-Aware Repair tool to open it, then move your mouse over the area to be edited. The tool will repair any issues with that area.
The Content-Aware Repair tool is a bit like the Magic Wand tool from the previous version of Photoshop, but you won’t need to use the mouse while you use the tool. The tool will pick out the best parts of your image and remove the rest.
As you can see, the Content-Aware Repair tool has an extensive list of editing features as well as a dedicated tool icon in the tools palette.
Like Photoshop, the tool has a few different modes: Fix, Content-Aware Fill, Content-Aware Replace, Content-Aware Move and Content-Aware Expand.
We’ll use Fix as our default mode.
We’ll start by clicking the Fix button to open the tool.

Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said on Tuesday that the administration does not yet have a preferred repayment plan for the US-Chinese trade war, contradicting earlier comments by President Donald Trump.
Donald Trump has threatened to inflict hundreds of billions of dollars of tariffs on China in order to pressure Beijing into reviving talks to negotiate trade deals, and maintain US-China trade relations on a more even footing. The US president has frequently used the analogy of a family feud between the two nations, citing China’s theft of US intellectual property as one reason for the disagreement.
However, economic data, including from the US, suggests that the effects of the China tariffs are already being felt, and that the economic landscape will be changing in the very near future. Therefore, the Trump administration will need to find a way to keep the trade-war going – a process that the Treasury Secretary Mnuchin implied could drag on for weeks.
Uncertainty about what, if any, legal process would be used to compel the Chinese to re-enter talks – should the US decide to leave the current negotiating table – has complicated the Trump administration’s latest strategy for dealing with China. In the meantime, Wall Street has seen its equity markets surge in response to the apparent US-China trade-war resolution.
“There is no way to predict whether this would be resolved on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday or Friday,” Mnuchin told reporters at the Defending Dodd-Frank summit on Tuesday.
“There could be multiple outcomes. One outcome could be that we come to a conclusion quickly. Another outcome is we have to continue negotiating and see how long it takes to get there.”
Mnuchin said that the Treasury Department is “monitoring” the situation, while underscoring that he will continue to be guided by Trump’s tariff orders.
The Treasury secretary said that the US expects to be able to resolve the China tariffs issue with Beijing, despite the contentious history of economic, social and political relations between the two nations.
“With regards to China, we’re fine. Our relationships are very good. We expect to have a very good outcome with China,” Mnuchin said.
“But with China, the question of what happens after the tariffs are implemented is a separate issue. We would monitor as the tariffs are implemented. The important thing is that we’re following the president’s trade policy. He’s been clear that this is an unfair trade policy,” he said.
