Mysterious black spots on photos released by the European Space Agency have mystified researchers for decades. It’s a scientific conundrum that has long plagued professionals and casual observers alike.

At the heart of the problem is how the black splotches appear. Most of the time, the spots are spread evenly across the image. But sometimes, a person will take a black-and-white photo of a white surface or a silver one, and their camera will create what looks like dark or light retinas on their images.

Now, a team of scientists has taken a new look at the mysterious spots that afflict so many photos and figured out what they are and why they appear on various types of camera.

Understanding black spots

“This is not your average image processing problem, which is what we often encounter,” said Jay McCarty, a member of the European Space Agency’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics.

“If the camera is taking a picture of a white wall, the actual wall is supposed to be white. And if the camera is taking a picture of a silver coin, the coin is supposed to be shiny and silver and not dark,” he added.

The spots are caused by small particles of dust lodged in the sensor that actually make up the camera. When light is focused on the camera, the dust particles are the first things to receive a reflection of the light, rather than the white surface the camera was aiming to capture.

“The solution to the problem is to solve the problem,” said McCarty.

The giant space telescope, called LISA, was launched in 2017 and will be undergoing its commissioning phase for the next four years. Its goal is to detect the gravitational waves produced by the collision of neutron stars and black holes. But it’s already being put to use in another study aimed at pinning down a fundamental scientific phenomenon.

The researchers were focused on black spots in photos of a microchip, the tiny circuit used to make modern computers.
